YWAM Africa Leadership Team meets in Bamako, Mali
Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5
ALT 2010 Daily Report 5: Leadership: paddling solo or traveling together?

The Africa Leadership Team finished their annual week of meetings at lunchtime today. Their final morning together was spent wrapping up some outstanding issues, evaluating their time together, and praying for each other. Most leaders fly back to their respective homes today, several will remain in Mali for the first few days of the West Africa Regional Leadership Team, who meet together next week.
Throughout this week a small group has been at the centre, serving the ALT as a Prayer Shield. They’ve prayed daily through many issues the leaders have discussed, giving feedback of how they felt led to pray. The ALT thanked them today, recognizing that revelation through prayer has helped them. One ALT member testified that this week there have been times of vulnerability and the expression of strong emotions, yet there has been “a gentle knitting together” of the ALT echoing a word brought by those praying.
Through the week they have brought several words regarding unity. Each evening convoys of long, flat-bottomed canoes have traveled down the river past the centre. Groups of 12 to 15 canoes roped together in an arrow shaped formation; one canoe at the rear with an outboard motor, powering the whole group. In the morning the convoys return, laden with sand for a local building site. Reflecting on this daily sight the prayer team saw the teamwork involved. They saw an appropriate technology, used for hundreds of years, combined with a modern motor. One boat with the potential to travel fast, prepared to slow down, share resources, and travel as part of a team; unity bringing efficiency and much greater productivity.

The word to the ALT was clear. The strong and the fast need to come alongside the slow and the weak, sharing; working as equals, not rushing ahead as individuals. One strong YWAM base or a charismatic leader cannot overcome the giants alone. We must work together, tied in a common purpose, united, and powered from the same source.
As we pray for our leaders, both in the ALT, and in each one of our teams, let’s pray with this in mind. May God unite them, and may they have the humility to lay aside personal agendas and work as a team. As we pioneer in new places and spheres, let’s do so together, not coming in from the outside, racing ahead with gadgets and technology, but working alongside one another in unity.
